Getting a dog is not as easy as it might seem. After you choose the breed, there are many other decisions that you will have to make and you need to take your time if you want this process to go smoothly. In the case of Labrador dogs, the process is easier, but it can become problematic. The good part is that the dog’s temperament will always be what you expect: you will get a gentle, loving and well behaved dog. First, you have to make sure that your future dog is well bred. If you fail to do so, your puppy might develop serious illnesses as he grows up or might turn up to be a mix between a Labrador and some other breed. There are only three coat colors that you can choose from if you plan on getting a well bred pup: black, yellow and chocolate. The coat should be very short and thick because it protects the dog from water and cold. If you live in the UK, you can also get a Labrador which has black and tan coat. However, this type of color is not recognized in other countries. You should know that the Golden Retriever is actually a crossbreed and this color is not officially recognized.

Once you make sure that the pup you are planning to buy is in fact a Labrador, there aren’t many other things that you need to think about. You just have to take him home and make sure to feed him properly. The pup should be at least 2 months old before you take him away from his mother and his diet is very important at this stage.

When choosing a name, make sure to pick one which is made from two syllables or less. This way, the dog won’t get confused and he will learn his name easier. Also, make sure to pick a name which doesn’t resemble any commands because this can also be confusing for a puppy. Another important think to remember is that the name should only be used for calling the dog over or positive feedback. If you see him doing something he isn’t supposed to do, you should correct him by saying “No” or “Stop”. If you just yell his name, he will feel guilty every time you call him.
